The IAF is the nation’s oldest and largest organizing network, a teaching and training institute founded by Saul Alinsky in the 1940’s. It has built sustained, non-partisan organizing projects across the country. These projects are diverse: they are African American, Hispanic, Anglo, and Asian; they are Jewish, Christian, and Muslim; they are socio-economically broad.
Today there are over 60 IAF-affiliated projects in the United States, working with hundreds of congregations and thousands of families. Click here to learn more about IAF affiliates in action.
One person familiar with the work of the IAF in many communities describes why it has been so successful in implementing strategies:
The IAF will provide leadership training in both congregational development and public action, as institutions work together (i) to reflect on their own religious and spiritual teachings that relate to developing a community that practices solidarity; (ii) to hear the stories of individuals and families as they face pressures in the larger community; (iii) to formalize an agenda or statement of the issues within each faith community individually; (iv) to create a city-wide agenda based on issues of common concern; and (v) to enter into research and agreed-upon actions that will improve the lives of individuals and families by holding public officials accountable to the needs of families. |
